The Hustle and Bustle

Shopping
My Christmas shopping began on Black Friday. And I loved it. It is so fun to share that day with my sisters and oldest nieces. This year, my niece Caitie experienced a right of passage as she came with us for the first time. Here we are celebrating the moment at Walmart at 5am...
She was so fun to shop with as her eyes were wide with the wonder of it all. Here we are, not as excited, later in the morning when we were in a seemingly eternal line at K-mart...
(Why can't I make cute funny faces for the camera? I think I'm going to start practicing in the mirror so I can look cuter for these kind of shots.)

I love shopping. It can be so exhilarating to hunt for your "prey" and catch it, at the lowest possible price. But, especially at Christmas time, my love for shopping and love of stuff has the potential to turn a holy day into nothing more than an opportunity to get more stuff. That is not what I want our Christmas to be. And it's not what I want my life to be about. So this year, in an attempt to tame the beast, I am returning some of those great black friday finds.

This doesn't mean I am completely done with my Christmas shopping. I laughed at the deejay that I heard talking about people doing "last minute shopping" last week. "Last minute shopping" is when you are still shopping on the 23rd. Believe me, I know all about that.

Wrapping presents
None down. A bunch to go. Tate asked if this year, I would have all the presents wrapped before Christmas morning. Oh how I long to be the kind of person that has presents wrapped and under the tree for weeks. But, Lulu would just open them and eat the paper, so I think I'm off the hook on that one.

Holiday Baking
I don't like baking. I guess all the measuring annoys me. Emmie went to someone's house once and they made cookies. She came home and said excitedly, "Mommy, we made cookies! And they didn't even come in a tube!". I want to be someone who turns on Christmas music and merrily does holiday baking, but I'm just not. But for my kids sake I am determined to bake something with them this year. Something that doesn't come in a tube.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland
It's cold here. So, thanks to your encouragement, I wore my Elmer Fudd hat out in public. Once. And then I lost it. Dang.

Holiday Social Worker Visits
Is that not a common holiday activity? Well, it is for us this year. We have a new social worker coming to our filthy lovely home this afternoon for a post-placement visit. I envision a quiet conversation in an immaculate house. But, of course, that is delusional. If I can just keep the dog from nudging her in the crotch and the laundry from eating her alive, I will consider the visit a success.

: ) Ok, my prayer is that NONE of our social worker visits plays out with her arriving as you are taking your newly-arrived-home daughter (newly...as in 2 wks home!) to her bed for a time-out becuase she clawed her brother & left red welts on his face. Add to that, your husband is 45 min. late home from work & he then sits down in the recliner & falls asleep. That happened at MY house!
My floor wasn't vacuumed, there were toys EVERYWHERE & the kids were SO naughty!! It was then that I told Bonnie I was sure paperwork was wrong & they had switched children on me...the paperwork said HoneyGirl was quiet, shy & lazy to talk.

Why do we put such pressure on ourselves? The only wrapped presents under our tree have been wrapped by my kids. Of course, as of this morning, my Christmas shopping includes a new washer since it broke on it's first load of the day. Now I'm glad all those presents aren't wrapped since I'm going to have to return them. ha! :)

How is everyone feeling? You have an excuse this year because you all have had a ruff month or so. I HATE wrapping with a passion, but it must get done!
Your home visit will be fine. I get more lazy with each visit... I don't think I did much of anything, in the way of cleaning, last time she was here!

Oh hush. You are the most photogenic person I know!

And hey - at least the sw won't think you're trying to hide anything from her.

so, do you have "official rules" for Black Friday? My sis explains the rules every year to my mom (thankfully I don't have to shop with them!).

- no shopping carts
- no looking at things not on the "list." This looking wastes precious time.

BTW, Harry C. is playing on your site. We LOVE Harry - and own two of his Christmas CDs.

I laughed out loud at work when I read your line about last minute shopping. I can remember going to Southroads Mall with my dad and "dividing and conquering" on the 23rd!

I haven't started shopping yet, so I guess that means I haven't wrapped everything yet...it's really weird, but I'm just not into the present thing this year. You are so gifted at expressing what we're all feeling!!

As usual, you make me laugh. :)
I have no presents wrapped either. My sweet hubby is asking when the tree will have beautifully wrapped presents under it. "Maybe this weekend?", he asks. Maybe....LOL
Or...here is a genius idea....HE could help wrap! Wow, why didn't he think of that????

I really need to make better use of the "cross out" feature on my blog. It is very effective in communicating sarcasm.... second, it is a tradition (I would italicize this word if I had that option) in our house to not have any presents under the tree until Christmas morn. As long as you call it a tradition (again with the italics) you can get away with a lot this time of year...

You crack me up as usual! I'm lucky that Mike enjoys wrapping presents & is good at it, so most of ours are done & under the tree. Thankfully, Mussie doesn't like the tree to poke him so he has stayed away from it & the presents. Except the day he was mad in time out and ripped one! :)

As far as the baking goes, cookies are such a pain! I love to bake (because then I get to eat it, also a reason I hate to bake) but cakes are the way to go. I got a cute cake pan at Joann's this year with small trees and gingerbread men. It wasn't too expensive, either. You could try that route. :) Less of a mess, not as time consuming, and they can decorate with icing and sprinkles, or just eat them plain. You could use food coloring for the batter (I didn't do this, but it's an idea) or use choc. cake for gingerbread...I'm giving myself ideas now!
Hope the rest of your time until Christmas day is fun, and spent well!! Sometimes your house sounds a lot like ours, except we have not had such big hearts as to take in a sweet addition. I can barely manage my own kids. I bet that's a much heard excuse.
Anyway, Merry Christmas!

I am so with you on the baking thing. I say why do it when you can get the look guaranteed by buying already made from the store. Why risk it, I say!

You aren't doing to bad on getting gifts wrapped, till you have your kids wrapping their own gifts. I wanted presents under the tree so bad growing up that my mom would put my gifts in a box and have me wrap them, along with my brothers and anyone elses she had ready.
