Slacker Mom Strikes Again!

I was driving along with Tate flipping through stations on the radio when he said "Wait a minute. That song you just passed sounded like an 80's song. Go back." Indeed it was. It was "Always Something There to Remind Me" by Naked Eyes.

My heart skipped a beat. My parenting has not been in vain. My children know and appreciate 80's music. They request "Safety Dance". They love "More Than a Feeling" by Boston. They love anything by Journey. They know all the words to "Mr. Roboto" and Jack has a seriously sweet dance routine to it. For this moment, I feel like a success as a mother.

I need this feeling since yesterday was a "slacker mom" kind of day. Actually many days feel like that. It started with me getting out of bed just in time to stumble into the garage as Bill and Tate were leaving to say "Have a good day at school, honey."

Totally forgot it was picture day. Oh well. How many middle school pictures really turn out that great anyway? Who cares if he was in an old t-shirt? Well I admit, I kind of care. But obviously not enough to drag myself out of bed in the morning to advise him on his clothing choice and spike his hair. He was probably thrilled that I forgot.

Grandma, Luci and I had a lunch date in the middle of the day...
But later, I was a half hour late for picking Tate up from school. Especially lame if you realize that I only pick him up two days a week. He was quick on his feet about it, as ever. When the school secretary put him on the phone and I was apologizing profusely, he good naturedly said "If I had a cell phone, then I could have called you to remind you about the early release." Score...Tate:1, Mom:0. And yet, still no cell phone dude.

I tried to make up for it with a trip to Sonic after school. Okay, okay that was as much (if not more) for me as it was for them. But we all enjoyed the Sonic and a play date at the park...

I think the height of my slacker mom-ness came when Lulu and I took a nap together from 5:15 until 6:30. The other three were happily freezing their brains watching a movie on a school night and dinner was nowhere to be found. Thankfully, leftovers saved the day.

However untimely, that nap helped me make it through the rest of the long night for Tate's 8pm football game clear across town. We bundled Lulu up for the event. She's going to need to get used to be carted around to the older kid's activities. Bill took the following picture of us together...
It looks like I needed a longer nap or have been sippin' something more than Sonic in that picture.

While I was fussing at him for not focusing the camera, he amused himself with taking unflattering pictures of me...
Above I am saying "Stop. Please stop." But he had no mercy. Everyone thinks he's such a nice guy, but I know his ornery side...
In the above picture I am trying to take deep breaths to deal with my frustration. If you look closely you may see fire coming out of my nostrils. At least he got the focus right that time.

I am not a slacker in all areas, though. Since I am new at this whole baby thing again, I have gotten all the little baby items that probably aren't necessary but you think you need when you are a first time mom. One of those is the mirror so that I can see her while I'm driving. I probably don't need to see her while I'm driving, she's not going to go anywhere! But I just miss her. So I have the mirror. We just realized that she can see me when I turn around and look at her. This has made our driving excursions way more fun as I get to see this...
And maybe a little more dangerous since I'm constantly turning around to catch a glimpse of that smile to which I am addicted. Oh well, I'll just crank up the 80's music and enjoy the ride!

I forgot it was picture day too. Tyler has a cell phone, so he called me as I was leaving and then I had to call Madison to dig up a shirt and some money for pictures (she was at home). I then quickly ran them back to him all for the sake of some not-so-great photos. Why? I don't know...there are always re-takes! You were wiser than me on that topic! :)

Okay...I just read the rest of your blog. I should never leave a comment until reading all of it. I just saw the cell phone comment and I want you to know I didn't make the comment prior to let you know how nice they can be. Really...however they are nice, especially if the child handles one well and Tyler is so good about that! :)

i think i love your music as much as your posts - yours is the only blog that changes music as often as you change posts - in fact, I just opened your blog and one of my kids said, "i love that song" I am doing my best to keep the 80's music alive and well in our house also!

You seriously have a gift for writing. I shared your blog with my mom the other day when I was home with a sick kid and she wanted to write down the address so she could read other postings! When I read your stuff, I can sometimes see myself and my family.
We need to go shoe shopping again - it's not too early to get Luci on board.

It was picture day? I truly did not know that.

And as long you aren't texting people to tell them how cute Lulu is, I'd say the mirror is just fin.

Two things: please don't take pictures while you're driving. I want to keep you and Lulu around. And secondly, "More Than a Feeling" is from the late 70's...not the 80's. Trust me, I know. Wanna bet? And it's way too good to be an 80's tune anyway.

ah, your sense of humor is so refreshing to me. I wish you lived here....I think we'd be friends! :) You, me and our two Luci/y's.

And, I'm slightly jealous of your late day nap. There, I said it.

Oh that last picture is so adorable...she couldn't be cuter!
As far as the slacking goes...I might give you a run for your money, but what I really want to say is they (the kids) are so forgiving. Especially when slushes and TV are involved! :) I am right there with you. I keep hoping for the next stage!

ok missy, i've been reading for a while and today is the day for me to come out of hiding. i soooo feel like a slacker mom right now, baby number 3 will be 5 months next week and the jump from 2 to 3 is huge! i can't even think about four. i actually prayed two days ago for God to not do that to me right now :) i pray you will feel the peace of God over your house.
i'm not sure if robrenna told you, but we go to the same church and one day i saw her on your blog and i was all "oh my gosh! so i read this blog, yada yada yada......" and robrenna was looking at me like i was crazy. he he he. anyways, i'm sure you're a great mom. i love your openess.

Don't think of the mirror as an unnessecary thing. When my daughter was a bit older than Lucy, I looked in the mirror after she made a funny noise to see her strangleing on the cord of her sweater. Needless to say I pulled over immediatly. It felt like it took forever to get it from around her neck...I shudder because I know that without the mirror, I wouldn't have stopped. So keep looking and smiling at your girl!

Early release days are tricky! It tripped me up last month, and my daughter was left to linger for longer than I care to say.
